I think that Babylon 5 serves as a good example of largely following the
esthetics of cinematography, while at the same time allowing an occasional
foray into newer styles (ie. an exterior shot of a tumbling fighter craft
as if a camera were fixed to an extension of the ship. The shot left a
pilot's perspective of vertigo, which I thought was a great idea).
Remember when A.H. made Vertigo, and most of his other films? He tried to
explore new ways to bend the limitations of the camera's view. A well
thought out LW scene can be used in the same way, to keep scenes from
getting out of control.
